What does eczema look like?

My almost one year old has a few dry patches (only really show up to the eye when she is hot) on her face next to her eye. It is dry not too scaly, and kind of small. About the size of a nickel. She also has a small (less than the size of a dime) spot on her side. This one is pink. She also has some dry patches (never pink) on her legs. Could this be eczema? If so, how do I treat it? I am going to ask her doctor when she goes for her 1 year check-up, but I don’t think this really warrants a doctor’s appt. She doesn’t seem to be in any pain or she doesn’t act like it even itches at all. Maybe it’s just dry skin??

Hi. I literally just took this picture for you. I have it on my arm at the moment (had it since birth, I’m 33). My children all inherited it from me. It looks a little different on my 2 y/o, but similar. Red, scaly, dry patches. I get it on my inner arm (opposite of my elbow). My children get it on their arms, legs, chest, face, torso, pretty much everywhere.

ETA: Before getting a prescription, try changing laundry detergent (All Clear and Free is great) and bath soaps (Aveeno is awesome). Aveeno also makes an oatmeal bath for babies with eczema. Aquaphor is good too.

Babies with eczema have a pinkish-red, scaly rash which is very itchy. This is often on their faces, scalp, behind the ears, over the body and on the arms and legs. The rash can get lumpy, weepy and crusty.

my son has the same problems. I never even brought it up to his pediatrician because it doesn’t seem to bother him, but I think it’s a ‘light’ case of eczema. it could be dry skin but the pink patches are more what eczema looks like. my son’s isn’t bad at all and we use the aveeno baby eczema lotion sometimes when I remember to and he’s been fine! even if it is just dry skin, the aveeno lotion will help that.

My daughter has eczema. It’s just small red patches here and there that are dry. They tend to get darker when she is outside or after a bath. They don’t really itch her. Her doctor prescribed a hydro-cortisone cream and it seems to help a bit.

My baby has very mild eczema (it comes and goes and it’s never been really bad), and it’s exactly as you describe it, some spots are a little pink (the ones in the crook of her elbow and backs of her knees) and the ones that aren’t in the joints are just a little bit dry, slightly scaly and kind of paler than the rest of her skin (she’s got an olive skin tone). I treat it with a bit of Alpha Keri oil in her bath, and a moisturiser on the patches of dry skin, but a lot of the time I’ll just leave it as it’s not bothering her and it’s only very very mild. When the weather is hot and it flares up, I deal with it then.

Good idea to ask the doctor at her 1 yo check up because a lot of other skin conditions can look like eczema but be totally different, and require different treatment.

Ok, so my 6 1/2 month old has the same weird thing going on…she gets red patches on her forehead and around her right eye and I’ve figured out that it’s due to heat. (Either the sun, her getting fussy, or it’s happened twice during bath time.) I just asked her pediatrician at her 6 month appointment if this was eczema and he said that if it was, it would stay for longer than a few minutes and it would make her uncomfortable. Well, it never seems to bother her and it always goes away on it’s own in less than 20 minutes. He just said she has "sensitive skin", that it’s nothing to worry about.

I would still describe what your girls’ looks like to your pediatrician, see what he says, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he too rules out eczema.
