Managing Psoriasis at Home
Psoriasis is a genetic skin condition that involves scaling, red patches, and thick plaques. In people with psoriasis a combination of genes (which have not yet all been identified by researchers) can be triggered to cause it. The affect of having psoriasis on your everyday life depends on the severity of your condition, but it is a statistical fact that depression rates are higher amongst those with psoriasis and those with moderate to severe conditions feel emotions such as shame and embarrassment and try to keep covered to avoid stares and questions. At the moment there is not a cure for psoriasis, there are medications to help manage it, and there are ways of managing psoriasis at home, the latter of which we will dip into here.
Some sufferers find having a humidifier in the house helps as it keeps moisture in the air and that helps prevent your skin from drying out. Re-hydration is also important. Take frequent soaks in a bath to help with the itching and swelling and to soften up the harder patches. It will also help get rid of some of the scales but make sure the water is not too hot, it should be lukewarm temperature as hot water aggravates the condition.
When you bathe make sure you use soaps that are mild and that have moisturizing cream in them. Chemicals can make your skin worse and so can perfumed soaps. After bathing just blot yourself dry and then moisturize yourself to keep your skin supple and prevent cracking. Make sure you choose a suitable moisturizer free of perfumes, a Vitamin E cream would be a good choice.
There are some medications that can make your psoriasis worse. Whenever you are being prescribed a treatment, make sure the doctor treating you is aware you have psoriasis. A couple of examples of things to avoid are anti-malaria drugs, lithium and beta blockers. Also make sure the doctor treating you for your psoriasis knows of any supplements or herbal remedies (for psoriasis) you are using.
Finally a lot of psoriasis sufferers find switching to mostly cotton or other natural fiber for your clothing helps a lot, as does losing some weight if you are carrying any extra pounds. Though sun can sometimes be part of the treatment of psoriasis you still need to be careful and avoid sunburn.
