Acne Myths – The True And The False

March 25th, 2011 Guest Author No comments

When it comes to acne, one can say that there are a lot of misleading and wrong information out there. Thankfully, scientific research has dispelled a lot of these ‘acne myths’. Now, we have a pretty good idea about what causes and what doesn’t cause acne. Below are seven of the biggest acne myths.

Are these myths true or false? Find out the truth about common acne and its myths

Is acne caused by eating certain foods?

This belief has been around for a long time but no scientific proof supports it. Although certain individuals may seem experience outbreaks when they eat certain foods, there is no universal laws that apply to everyone. Your acne will not increase from eating chocolate, pizza, nuts, and greasy food.

Dirt or having dirty skin is related to acne

Acne isn’t caused by dirt but having clean skin has other benefits. Acne is formed under the surface of the skin and is due to build-ups of sebum and dead skin cells. It’s not dirt that clogs your follicles.

If you wash your face all the time, then your acne will clear up

This kind of relates to myth #3. Having clean skin is not the answer to preventing acne. Overdoing it as far as washing your face can actually make matters worse. If you strip your skin of oil, then this could lead to more breakouts in the future.

Teens are the only ones who get acne

It is true that 9 out of 10 teenagers experience acne, but it is also true that about 1 in 4 adults get it also. Teenagers have such a high incidence of acne because acne is connected with hormones, but at various times in their lives adults also go through hormonal stages.

Stress can cause acne

When it comes to acne, scientific evidence shows that stress isn’t a large factor. Bouts of acne is caused by stress and this was the belief for many years but it’s not true.

It’s possible to cure acne

Many people view acne as a disease that can be permanently cured. Too bad this isn’t true. Through proper skin care, acne can be controlled and prevented but it can’t be cured.

OH HELL… extremely dry skin with acne?

January 10th, 2011 Guest Author 4 comments

I just turned 21 and mother nature’s birthday gift to me was to take my already dry, sensitive skin and suddenly make it EXTREMELY dry (most of my body, within a week, has become covered with dry, flaky eczema) and also give me acne, mostly on the lower half of my face around my mouth and jaw. It’s actually so bad that my doctor prescribed me with a topical antimicrobial lotion but the rest of my skincare routine may now be an issue.

Currently I start with Cetaphil (original, not oily skin) and follow with a gentle tea tree oil soap on problem areas. I use a soft face brush with both which I sanitize before and after each use. I follow with Cetaphil moisturizing lotion (though since my skin has gone crazy I upped to the cream as my skin sucks every bit of everything up like a sponge) and repeat at night followed a few minutes later with plain old Olay night cream (stopped this since skin crazies since it irritates now).

So. Issue being… how do I keep my poor skin from drying, peeling, and cracking while still helping treat the acne? Almost all acne products are made for oily skin and I can NOT use them. Suggestions?
NOTE: Accutane is EXTREMELY drying to the skin and in my case could quite possibly result in severe cracking and infection. Please actually read the details before spamming with copypasta answers.
