Using Ice Pack To Treat Acromioclavicular Joint Pain

April 3rd, 2011 Guest Author No comments

The torn or separation of the shoulder joint is often followed by severe Acromioclavicular joint pain which can sometimes be absolutely unbearable. When the collarbone known as the clavicle or the shoulder blade called scapula is separated from each other due to injury it often referred to as AC injury. If you’re familiar with certain sports figures you probably have heard of AC injuries which are sustained more from sports and other physical activities. Baseball pitchers are more likely to have separated shoulder injuries to the acromioclavicular joint.

If you think of any sports or activities where people’s shoulders are vulnerable to injuries many will come to mind. Wrestling where people’s can be driven to the mat, or rock climbing where people use their hand to grab and hold rocks, are just few examples of sports where acromioclavicular injuries are more likely to occur. American football is another physical and contact sports where severe injuries are not limited to heads alone, but also to shoulders. There are other ways to sustain injuries to the shoulder, but sporting activities are the obvious culprit.

Shoulder separation or torn occurs when a sudden or traumatic injury to the collarbone or the shoulder blade which results to the two joint being separated from one another. Clavicle or collarbone and the scapula or the shoulder blade comes apart when the end of the scapula called acromion and the acromioclavicular joint are disjoined. When these type of injuries occur, and healing and treatments were rushed and not tempered, the result is often an injury that never completely heals and will keep coming back as the acromioclavicular joint pain will linger for a very long time.

The type of pain that is often associated with this type of injuries can be debilitating. The clavicle can be tender, and the pain can have ringing sensation to it. Bruising is also part of the injury and swelling is often the early signs of the acromioclavicular joint injuries. As we talked about earlier, this type of shoulder injuries can either be mild which is a separation, or severe which is as a result of torn. Torn is when the collarbone and the shoulder blade are completely separated.

The most important and often the first line of defense for any acromioclavicular joint pain injury is reducing the swelling and the inflammation. Nothing works better in quelling down inflammations and swelling than icing, and that is why most doctors will tell you to ice down the swelling before they can actually see and treat your shoulder injury. Very important part of any shoulder or similar injuries is using ice pack to reduce the swelling and inflammation, and many doctors will not start treating your injury until the swelling goes down.

We cannot completely avoid sustaining acromioclavicular joint injuries, but when we do, treatment is the only alternatives left for us to treat and let the injury heal. You can ice and reduce the swelling and inflammations, but you cannot perform surgeries on yourself, so consult with a doctor when you sustain an injury to your shoulder that you feel is serious.
